Protect yourself and your family from the sun

Summer is officially here, and many people are taking advantage of the warmer temperatures and engaging in a wide variety of outdoor activities. The physical exercise and vitamin D from sun exposure are great for our bodies, but the ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun can cause skin damage, eye damage, immune system suppression, and skin cancer.

According to the Skin Cancer Foundation:

  • One in five Americans will develop skin cancer by the age of 70.
  • More than two people die of skin cancer in the United States every hour.
  • Having five or more sunburns doubles your risk for melanoma.
  • An estimated 196,060 of melanoma will be diagnosed in the United States in 2020.

While the statistics about skin cancer are staggering, there’s a silver lining. Taking the right precautions can greatly reduce the chance of developing skin cancer. Some simple steps you can take to protect yourself and your family include selecting and properly applying the right sunscreen, wearing protective clothing, hats, and sunglasses, and limiting direct exposure to sun.
