2020

? ?? We are proud to announce the addition of Bobbi Hall and Julie Boyce to our team. As many of you know, Bobbi and Julie own and operate Hall’s Construction Materials Testing, Inc. and have done wonders writing and implementing asphalt specifications for the City of Mansfield and other entities that have adopted these specifications. Point in fact: The City of Mansfield is running out of streets to pave due to Bobbi’s specifications. As she always says: “The proof is in the pudding”.
? ? ? Initially Bobbi’s idea, I believe 2006 is when she introduced me to the idea, by the time I got revved up to start this thing, she didn’t want to be involved for personal reasons. However, sometime during the 2018 paving season she realized conditions for technicians were deteriorating. That being said, she will be our Executive Director for the time being. I say for the time being because, we will eventually have to elect officers as a non-profit and position titles will change. Becoming a non-profit will allow donations to be tax deductible. We will inform you when this is completed.
? ? ?We have also secured a location/facility to conduct meetings. Only registered members will receive an invitation. While only registered technicians may attend future meetings, we encourage contractors, engineering consultants and ODOT personnel to submit their concerns through our website for consideration. Any and all submittals will remain strictly confidential. Let’s face it folks, it’s taken a group effort to get where we are today.
? ? ??Although we have created considerable buzz throughout the industry, it seems technicians are reluctant to register. Number one reason being, their employer thinks we are trying to start a union. This certainly is not the case. With the right-to-work bill coming up for vote soon, it would be counter-productive to even consider forming a union right now. Right-to-work bills have passed in over 50% of the states in the union. At this time, I believe Missouri and New Hampshire are the only states that have defeated the bill.
? ? ? While not our sole intent, we are going to tackle the issues that contractors are reluctant to get involved for fear of repercussions from ODOT. Along with amassing registered members, raising funds for possible legal action or litigation, if needed, will be of the utmost importance. Hopefully it will never come to this as we have other tactics in mind for getting things done.
? ? ? We wish you all a successful and productive 2020 paving season!
?
?All the best,
?Garrett A. Swartz
